Air O Sport Tournament Rules

General Play:

  • Non-Contact Play: All games are non-contact; aggressive fouls are not permitted.
  • Game Structure: Games consist of four (4) 5-minute quarters.
  • Spectator Entry: There is no entry or gate fee for spectators. Family and friends are encouraged to come and support.
  • Timekeeping and Scoring: Clock and score will be managed by tournament volunteers.
  • Equipment: Game disks, sporting equipment will be provided by the tournament organizers. Participants are required to wear appropriate athletic attire and non-cleated sports shoes during all events.
  • Warm-Up: A three-minute warm-up period is allocated before each game. Teams should use this time to prepare and strategize.
  • Timeouts: Each team is allowed one (1) timeout per game, with a duration of 2 minutes.
  • Early Start: Games may start earlier than scheduled if the field is available. Teams should be ready to play 15 minutes before their scheduled start time.

Scoring and Points:

  • Game Start: Each game starts with a jump disk between the two shortest players on opposing teams. This helps to remind the underdog that Air O Sport is anyone’s game and height isn’t an advantage.
  • Offensive Play: The offensive team is required to execute a minimum of two passes among team members before attempting a shot. This rule is designed to encourage teamwork and strategic play. Offensive players holding the disk may pass, run, and shoot… Offensive teams are not permitted to enter into the circle.
  • Defensive Restrictions: Defensive Play: Defenders must stay clear of the circle, except when entering to retrieve a missed shot by the opposing team. True to the spirit of competitive sports, actions like blocks, steals, and defensive maneuvers are all fair game, mirroring the dynamic play found in basketball. However, grabbing the disc straight from an opponent’s hands is off-limits.
  • Fouls: Personal fouls, result in 1 free throw awarded to the offended team. Fair play is encouraged at all times.
  • Scoring: Points are scored by knocking off targets with direct hits. The precision and skill are rewarded.

Game Progression:

  • Point System: Scoring Details: Earn 1 point for knocking off a rocket with a direct hit. Hits on the pole that dislodge targets also grant 1 point. Skill shots that take down the top 2-3 rockets in a “direct shot domino effect” score additional points, rewarding precision and giving the game an exciting comeback feature.
    • Tiebreaker: Games will resolve ties with a 2-minute overtime. If the game ties at the end of overtime each team gets three attempts in a shootout to hit targets. If still tied, the game moves to sudden death, with teams taking one shot each round until a winner is determined by knocking off a target.
    • Conduct: Fighting or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated. Players involved in such incidents will be immediately expelled from the tournament.
